To those interested in treading the path of kendo, the way of the sword:
Are you still trying to figure out whether or not kendo is for you? Do you sometimes feel like you don’t know what you’re doing when you step in the dojo (school)?
If you already practice, do you ever wonder what your sensei is saying?
Ever try to do a technique that your instructors make look so entirely simple and end up making a fool of yourself?
Believe me when I say that I know precisely what you’ve gone through. We all start in that situation. We all have to start somewhere. Whether you’re inexperienced, young, old, weak, strong, uncoordinated, or a bundle of raw talent, this site is here to help you gain knowledge a little knowledge... and to have some fun while you’re at it!
But what is kendo?
If you don’t know what kendo is and have never heard of it before, it is Japanese sword fighting (fencing). At first, it may seem barbaric and brutish, than as you grow to understand it better, it develops a powerful, yet deadly, grace that you never would have thought to have seen.
Here is what it isn't:
It is not a sport. Sport entails that victory must be achieved over your opponent at all costs. In kendo, while there is a physical opponent, the real enemy is within yourself.
It is not a hobby. Hobbies are activities you do in your spare time. Once you experience a practice session, you will want to make time to train.
It is not a means of self-defense. There is no such things "street-fighting techniques" or "practical uses" in this art. It is about discipline-- it is about physical, emotional, and spiritual growth.
What's so interesting about this particular martial art? Well, besides just being plain cool (you are learning swordsmanship after all) it is an excellent way to get in shape and develop mental discipline. Plus, it is an excellent environment to make friendships that can last lifetime.
This site is a resource and community for enthusiasts of this ancient martial art. It's a place where practitioners can come together and express their ideas, thoughts, and opinions about martial art we all enjoy and love. If you’re still trying to figure out whether or not this art is for someone like you, please start at Beginner's Korner for information in the most easily digestible layout.
