About Kendokorner.com

Kendokorner was put together in 2009 by a group of kendo students ranging in experience from 6 years to 12 years. We are firmly dedicated to the promotion of kendo as way to better oneself and society.

While none of us can be accurately called professional kendoists, we hope to have a strong reader-base that can help us by adding content in the form of articles, discussions, and referrals to allow us to broaden our knowledge of the “way” we all know and love.

Our mission is to show the world the beauty and power of this ancient martial art through articles, discussions, and photo-based guides. It is our sincere desire to have a place on the web where information on kendo can be given and shared and ideas can be expressed and expanded upon.

Accurate information on kendo is everywhere throughout the web… but only if you know where to look. Not to mention that most of the best sites are often in Japanese! Kendokorner was made in order to conglomerate that knowledge and make it more accessible, as well more understandable, to the general public.

Our individual experiences in kendo ranges from 6 years to 12 years. We are all far from being masters at this art… but then again, who can rightly say that they’ve mastered kendo? Many 8-dan (8th degree black-belt) sensei still consider themselves beginners even though they have been practicing for decades upon decades.

In the spirit of learning, Kendokorner will undoubtedly evolve over the years as its readers, contributors, and administrators will be in a constant state of growth in their lives as kendoists and citizens of society.

The content of this site is written in consideration of the traditional Japanese values that makes kendo what it is. HOWEVER, the material is meant for a western audience and may not be in entirely subjective in its approach. As we are all aware of, many Japanese concepts are very difficult to accurately explain in English.

We promise to make the very best effort to avoid the problem of being “lost in translation”.

We hope you enjoy your stay here!

Our Philosophy

Kendo is not solely a sport. It is not an art. It is not for self-defense. Kendo is a way of life. It is a way of experiencing life through the study of the sword. Most importantly, it is a way of bettering ourselves in our roles as citizens, as kendoists, and as human beings.

The All Japan Kendo Federation states: “The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana (sword).”

There are many sites out there that give a glimpse of the wide world of kendo. The problem is just that: They only give a glimpse of a world as vast as life itself. This site is here as a resource for kendo practitioners of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. Specifically, it is here as a resource for students. It is by no means a guide! It is merely a collection of ideas, thoughts, and practices that one must understand in order to pursue the way of the sword.
