Concepts in kendo

There are several concepts in kendo that are important to understand. They are considered conceptual, since in our society and culture, many of the ideas are quite abstract. Kendo is considered and classified as a sport. It is, of course, a martial art and a way of life before it is a sport, but not everyone realizes this.

What separates kendo from other sports are the conceptual philosophies behind it. To put it simply, Kendo is not merely a physical activity. It is primarily a mental activity that involves the mind as much, if not more than, the physical body.

The practice of kendo requires an understanding of several principles. These principles are a few flakes of snow in the giant avalanche of kendo’s teachings and cannot be adequately explained through writing alone—they must be demonstrated, comprehended, understood, and only then can they be applied. As an overview of the concepts you will be introduced to in practice, please review the following articles:

  • Seme or initiative.
  • Zanshin or preparedness.
